Flex or Rest? Can You Workout After Botox?

  • April 3, 2024
  • Health & Wellness

If you are thinking about can you work out after Botox injections? Then this is the right space where you will get all the answers.  As we age, the natural production of collagen in our skin declines, leading to the development of fine lines and wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles, such as those on the forehead, glabella, and around the eyes (crow’s feet), result from repeated muscle movements combined with collagen loss. Fortunately, Botox, or botulinum toxin, offers a non-invasive solution to soften and eliminate these dynamic wrinkles.

The discussion in this blog is about a few questions that are relevant for those looking to undergo Botox treatment such as – what is Botox?  Can you workout after Botox? and when can you workout after Botox?

Understanding Botox

Botox Cosmetic is an injectable treatment widely used to combat signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. After getting the approval from FDA it has become the most popular and preferred non-invasive cosmetic procedure in the U.S since 2002. Botox is derived from botulinum toxin type A which is a neurotoxin produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria. Its generic name is OnabotulinumtoxinA.

Injectable Botulinum Toxin A which is used for Botox treatment is non-invasive alternative way to preserve a young, smooth, and healthy appearance of the skin. It is worth mentioning that one of the main benefits of Botox is that it requires only a slight downtime, in a way that some patients schedule their treating session during the lunch break.

FDA-approved for treating moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines. Botox has surged in popularity, becoming the leading non-invasive cosmetic injectable in the United States.

Botox can also address necklines, jaw slimming, and lip flips. Beyond cosmetic uses, Botox is also approved to relieve symptoms of hyperhidrosis, TMJ, migraines, blepharospasm, and cervical dystonia.

Before we discuss can you workout after botox, let’s first talk about why you should not be doing exercise after the procedure.

Why you should not exercise after Botox?

Exercising immediately after receiving Botox injections can potentially affect the outcome for several reasons, such as

  1. Exercise can put pressure on the injected area

After having a Botox procedure dermatologists suggest that you should not touch your face for as long as 4 hours. Otherwise, the Botox will not settle in the injected place and will get shifted to other areas. Avoid any kind of intentional pressure. For instance, do not put pressure when wiping sweat during workouts, even dabbing on injected areas could result in unwanted migration and uneasiness. Also, while swimming, or cycling do not wear any face or head-gear as it will put excessive pressure on the area. Besides, injected areas like thighs or hips might also be pressurized by equipment that can destabilize the results of Botox.

  1. Diffusion due to rise in blood flow

Strenuous workouts have the potential to cause extreme changes in blood circulation. Hence, the diffusion of the Botox product used might shift from the original site to other areas. Such a diffusion process, even if initially localized, may be responsible for the temporary paralysis of nearby muscles. This diffusion can cause inflammation, bruises, and swelling at the injection site due to changes in blood pressure.

  1. Excessive movement

Maintaining a stable head position post-Botox is necessary to prevent migration of Botox to other areas than the injected site. Even low-impact exercises like yoga or Pilates, which require various head movements, can disrupt the injected area and impact the desired outcome. Therefore, any facial straining during exercise can impact the effectiveness of the treatment.

When can you workout after botox?

After receiving Botox treatment, you need to be a little more careful of your exercise routine to achieve best results. Here are some guidelines to follow related to question when can you workout after botox

  • Refrain from exhausting exercise for 24 hours: Exercising immediately after Botox can increase blood circulation. This can cause the injected Botox to migrate to surrounding areas. This migration may cause unwanted side effects such as drooping eyebrows and eyelids.
  • Avoid running on the treadmill or aerobic exercise for four hours: High-intensity activities that elevate your heart rate should be avoided soon after Botox treatment to minimize the risk of complications.
  • Steer clear of heat exposure: Activities like saunas, hot yoga, tanning booths, and hot tubs should be avoided post-Botox. Because the exposure to heat can increase blood flow and heighten the risk of bruising.

Once the 24-hour period has passed, you can resume your regular exercise routine, including activities like cycling, hiking, running, and yoga, without any concerns about impacting the efficacy of the Botox treatment.
