Hadi Choopan’s journey to becoming a professional bodybuilder

Hadi Choopan spent his early bodybuilding years focusing solely on gaining size and beginning to look like a bodybuilder. Jamshid Owji was his first coach in 2002. Due to Hadi’s small size at the time, Jamshid only allowed him to lift 5kg weights. Nonetheless, Choopan would grow and become larger.

Hadi Choopan finished third in a national competition after only three years of professional bodybuilding. He also won first place in competitions in his hometown of Providence of Fars. However, it was in 2005 that he won his first national title and established himself as someone to watch.

Hadi Choopan won first place in the WBPF Asia Championships in 2013, kicking off a successful professional career. He returned to compete in the WBPF World Bodybuilding Championships, winning gold in 2013, 2014, and 2015. Despite his success, this was his only competition during those years.

Choopan would stop training with Ne’mati in 2017, ushering in the next chapter of his professional career. He would train with the world-renowned Hany Rambod at this point and in the future. As a result, his career began to take a bigger step forward. He made his debut under Rambod’s tutelage at the 2017 Mr. Olympia Amateur, where he won a gold medal.

Hadi Choopan competed three more times in 2017, earning three silver medals. Most notably, he was defeated by multiple-time 212 Olympia champion Flex Lewis in the 2017 Asia Grand Prix. Many in attendance, however, found this decision to be contentious. Despite the judge’s decision, sceptics claimed that Choopan appeared to have a larger and better physique than Lewis.

Major Hurdles in Hady Choopan Success

    First

President Donald Trump barred all Iranian nationals from entering the country in 2018, and Hadi was denied a visa to compete in the Arnold Classic that year. Hadi Choopan expressed his displeasure, calling the incident discriminatory.

    Second

Choopan invoked the name of Ahura Mazda on Instagram before winning Mr. Olympia 2022.

Ahura Mazda is the supreme deity of the pre-Islamic Iranian faith of Zoroastrianism, he also dedicated the award to the “honourable women of Iran”.

Given the country’s civil unrest and protests, this has been interpreted as an act of defiance against Islam and the Islamic regime, which punishes apostasy with death.
